“If your painting screams at you – threaten to take
up poetry!” Brent has had a fascination with the written word ever since high school, when it was discovered his art teacher hated cartoons… Luckily for Brent, his English teacher was a lot more inspiring. During the mid to late 80’s, he started reading & performing his original poetry in folk clubs & venues in Auckland and Wellington. A background in amateur theatre added to Brent’s ever-increasing confidence in front of a live audience. This eventually lead him into writing, producing and starring in his very own stage shows & “fringe” theatre productions. Since the mid 90’s Brent has self-published three (limited edition) books of his poetry/cartoons and he has also co-produced a compact disc of his spoken word. In more recent times Brent has started working on a series of children’s books. And his (often quirky, always romantic) blend of poetry/prose continues to appear in his seascapes & larger than life cartoon murals. PS: it’s in his blood… Try Googling Charles Harpur. Since January 2010 Brent has put up a poetry blog. Click Here Some of Brent’s favorite wordsmiths
include: “It is the function of art to renew our perception. What
we are familiar with we cease to see. The writer shakes up the familiar
scene, and, as if by magic, we see a new meaning in it.”
